Et Tu XP SP3???
Microsoft done did it again! In 2000 they released Windows ME (Millenium Edition) - which is quite possibly their biggest flop ever - followed by a less than stellar full public release of Vista, now they gone and screwed up XP as well. More specifically, the third service pack release also known as SP3 has been causing almost as much grief and headaches for PC users as Vista! Can you say train wrecks galore?
OK, all Shakespearian references to Julius Ceasar in the title of the article aside, the latest and greatest train wreck to hit home computers these days has been Microsoft’s release of Service Pack 3 or SP3 for Windows XP. Just when folks thought it was safe to avoid upgrading to Vista by staying with a tried and now (mostly) true operating system, good ole Billy Gates and crew have bent over a few unsuspecting victims so that they can “take another one for the team.” SP3 has been causing all sorts of woes since being unleashed on 6 May 2008 and this wild animal is a destroyer!
Installing XP SP3 will start with some of your programs not working properly or intermittantly. But the one-two punch comes when suckers… er, I mean innocent victims go to uninstall SP3 or roll the system back, the dang thing also erases all roll-back or restoration points. Can you say ouch?
Other ailments associated with this update include but are not limited to - remote access to your PC not working, certain versions of IE7 crashing and burning, ActiveX controls locking up, some HP/AMD systems are susceptible to an endless stream of the BSOD (blue screen of death) or eternally rebooting systems and certain AMD motherboards experiencing incompatibility issues with the BIOS being reported as ACPI non-compliant. Again, that’s just to name a few of the problems folks have been encountering.
Of course, as with all things, there are exceptions to the rule. Some people claim that they have had no problems with the update. Still others have been able to install with no problems on some computers and unable to install on others. Personally I have found that most systems will have an assortment of registery-related problems while a select few older (and upgraded) models didn’t have any issues at all - which still has me scratching my head!
Anyway, in regards to computer DJing, the better course of action - as is being advised to everyone else who hasn’t installed the update - don’t bother installing it. There are very few work-arounds and even then they are for specific systems and hardware configurations. In other words, do not install SP3 on your Windows XP CPS!!!
