Confessions of a ‘Laptop Hater’

The other day I had this smashingly brillant idea that I would take some of the old messages I have received about DJing with a computer and use the good ones as a topic to write a post about. Good idea huh? I thought so too – at least until more folks get over their shyness of posting questions or comments here!

Anyway, this one came from my good freind, Dan Sauer – Pegasus Mobile Entertainment:

Charles,

Was cleaning up my inbox here at [ProDJ.com], and came across a note I made about your blog being down some time ago. Suffice it to say, I visited again, and… Nice work. Totally enjoyed the laptops suck posts. I have been contemplating going back to laptops as the weight of the CPS system I am now using is killing me.

After reading your posts, I think I might scratch that idea again. Yet, I do wonder… Would one of the newer dual core laptops work if one had a good cooling fan with it, and were not to use vista, and strip all but the necessary files needed for djing?

I do suspect what the answer will be…

Great work on the blog.

Dan

Dan, thank you for your kind comments, you obviously have a great sense of taste.

To answer your question – while I rib laptop users unmercifully sometimes, most modern high-end laptops are quite capable of filling the role of music machine. There are still much better options available to you especialy when looking at setting up RAID arrays for system performance and as a means of backing up your music library. However, if you plan on doing karaoke, video, DMX lighting or anything else above and beyond the realm of audio – I still highly recommend looking at your other options. In other words, even with the advances that have been made in the realm of making laptops faster and more powerful, the bottom line is that a CPS of any other flavor will beat the laptop in every aspect except for portability.

PS: Dan, please feel welcome to post your comments or questions to my blog anytime.
